After nine months of gruelling competition, the Volvo Ocean Race boats have started the final leg of the closest-ever contest in the round-the-world event’s 45-year history. Yacht Chefs Contest at the Yacht Club de Monaco
As part of its training center La Belle Classe Academy, dedicated to the yachting professionals, the Yacht Club de Monaco has partnered with the yacht brokerage company Bluewater to organize, on April 5, a culinary contest for yacht chefs. The Volvo Ocean Race will celebrate 45 years of history with a Legends Race on the final leg of the 2017-18 edition from Gothenburg to The Hague, says a press statement. Any yacht to have featured in the Whitbread Round the World Race or Volvo Ocean Race, dating back to 1973-74, will be welcome to join the 2018 Legends Race. The race will be run over the same course, and around the same time, as the closing leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, which starts from Gothenburg on 21 June.

First over the Line - Shetland Race
Arriving at 4.11am this morning, Solo 2, skippered by Rune Aasberg, is now flying the Bergen Shetland Blue Ribbon today as the first to finish this year’s race across the North Sea from Norway. With good wind conditions, Solo 2 reached up to 16 knots on the crossing to finish the race in just over 19 hours. The race started close to Marsteinen Lighthouse in outer Korsfjorden south of Bergen, on Wednesday, June 22 at 10 a.m. local time. A total of 34 yachts in the race are closing in on Lerwick with a steady arrivals expected throughout the morning.

Volvo Ocean Race Sails on Hong Kong's Horizon
The world’s premier round-the-world sailing event will visit Hong Kong for the first time after the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) announced Wednesday the city has been chosen as a host port for the 2017-18 edition. Clipper Yacht Race: Making The Turn
Strong winds in the Da Nang New Discovery of Asia Race have led to some thrilling racing conditions for the Clipper Race fleet, with teams recording speeds of over 32 knots near the virtual mark at the most southern point of the course. The latest product to join Intellian’s i-Series antenna range, the i5P, will be unveiled at the METSTRADE exhibition November 17-19 in Amsterdam. Intellian, a producer of maritime satellite communication antenna technology, will display the newest addition to its TVRO portfolio during this year’s METSTRADE show. The all-new i5P creates a new size category of marine satellite TV systems. The system allows inland and coastal craft across Europe as well as vessels in the Mediterranean cruise sector to travel further and experience higher performance with a smaller antenna, according to the manufacturer.
New Recreation Submersible Dives Deep
Triton Submarines LLC, a builder of personal submarines designed for yacht deployment, has launched a new submersible designed to dive to ocean depths of 6,600 feet, transporting passengers deeper than other models in its range. Announcing the new submersible was Triton Submarines CEO L. Bruce Jones, who unveiled plans for the new Triton 6600/2 at a press conference held at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on November 6. “We are excited about this new deep-diving acrylic-hulled sub that will dive twice as deep as our 3300 series submersibles,” Jones said.

Rolex Middle Sea Race: More than 100 Yachts
The 2015 edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, will start this Saturday, 17th October, in Grand Harbour, Malta. For the second year in succession, well over 100 yachts will be competing, flying the flags of 22 countries. The 36th edition of the race has a record number of 11 canting keel carbon fibre flyers racing, and weather permitting all of these high performance yachts are capable of breaking the course record, which has stood since George David's Rambler 90 record run of 2007 (47 hours 55 minutes and 3 seconds).

Crystal Cruises Plans for Expansion
Crystal Cruises announced an expansion plan under new owners Genting Hong Kong that includes three 1,000-passenger vessels, its first new ships in decades. Plus, Crystal will expand into adventure, yacht and river cruising, and luxury jet trips. The three Crystal Exclusive Class ships will be about the same size as the 20-year-old Crystal Symphony and the slightly larger 2003-built Crystal Serenity. The line has signed a letter of intent with Lloyd Werft to build the ocean ships, which will have an unprecedented space ratio of 100 gross tons of space per guest, Crystal said.

Yachts competing in the annual Bergen-Shetland Race will arrive in Lerwick Harbour next week for the highlight of the port’s yachting season. Third Superyacht under Construction at Sunrise Yachts
After successful launches of two 45m Sunrise vessels – superyacht Africa (2009) and luxury yacht Atomic (2014) – the Turkish shipyard has recently laid the keel of the third 45m motor yacht at its yard in Antalya, with a scheduled completion time of 26 months. Volvo Ocean Race Sails Again after Cyclone Pam delay
The fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in New Zealand finally got underway on Wednesday following a three-day delay to avoid the worst of Cyclone Pam. The nine-month round-the-world yacht race was scheduled to leave Auckland for Itajai, Brazil on Sunday. The 6776 nautical mile race from Auckland to Itajai in Brazil will take roughly three weeks to complete. It will take the fleet back into the Atlantic for the closing stages of the leg for the first time since November before passing Cape Horn.
Queen Mary 2 Skips Wellington
Mega-cruise ship Queen Mary 2 has ditched its Wellington visit with the capital in sight on account of heavy swells caused by Cyclone Pam. The Queen Mary 2 was due in Wellington this morning after spending time in the Marlborough Sounds, but 8-metre swells at the entrance to the harbour meant it was too risky. The vessel has a deep draft which doesn't leave much margin for error, harbourmaster Mike Price told said. The 345-metre long ship, which can carry more than 3000 passengers, was sailing on to Auckland via the west coast to avoid the rough seas created by Pam, he said.

Cyclone Pam continues to delay the restart of the Volvo Ocean race with organizers grounding the six yachts in the race until weather associated with the deadly system stabilizes. The organizers are being cautious with the sea state in the wake of the cyclone an immediate concerns. Race management and operations team have a round-the-clock watch system of personnel on Auckland's viaduct to monitor the weather and its effect on the boats. “We now don’t expect the impact in Auckland to be as high as first feared,” said Volvo Ocean race meteorologist, Gonzalo Infante.
